What was the initial idea?

2D Footsteps is a mobile game that aims to take the player on a journey - a visual walkthrough of a characters path through the snowy mountains that has great focus on the atmospheric sound and aesthetic visual design. As the character makes their way through the snow, passing a ski resort with ski-lifts, snowboarders and snowball fights, the player will need to make very simple interactions with the environment to help the player persist on their journey.

How has it developed?

We have established some of the interactions that will be shown below in our prototype video. These interactions will involve the player searching the on-screen environment for clues and object that will help the player progress on the journey. They will be designed to be quite simple as the focus will lie on the immersion of sound and visual art.

Developed gameplay loop:

Activity/Risk: Interact with parts of the environment to allow the character to progress on the journey through the snow.

Rewards: Feel immersed by the atmospheric sound and visuals that provide the setting to regulate your feelings and reflect.

Opportunity: Experiencing realism in an environment made accessible for you to use sound and visuals to regulate your emotions.

How does it benefit the player?

Prototype: Paper stop-motion animation drawn and animated by Emilia and I. Video with sound design and captions developed by Emilia.
